STREET CLOCKS
Decorative street clocks were often placed on sidewalks to attract business, especially jewelry stores.

Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street in Jamaica, Queens. Its location in front of the old Gertz department store.

GERTZ DEPARTMENT STORE, Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, NY - The original Gertz store closed in 1980.
in March, 1988 the 100,000-square-foot Gertz Mall opened. The new shopping center in the Jamaica section of Queens opened with 76 stores and seven food outlets in the basement and first floor of what once was one Gertz Department Store. The new corporate name, STREG Inc. is a play on the family name. Jerry Gertz is vice president of STREG Inc.

The renovation of the original seven-story building took five years and a cost of $35 million. The work included the conversion of the upper six floors of the then 50-year-old granite-faced structure into office space. After New York State agencies moved into the space, workers claimed that asbestos found in a sub-basement was improperly removed, causing them to picket thus delaing the renovation. That behind them they completed the plan and now Jamaica has the Gertz Mall.
